100 Years of Strasser Accordion Manufacturing: History, Tradition, Innovation, and Sound Culture from Seiersberg near Graz – For a century, Strasser accordion manufacturing has stood for meticulous craftsmanship, a spirit of innovation, and a distinctive sound. The traditional Styrian company is celebrating its 100th anniversary and looks back on an extraordinary company history, which continues successfully to this day in its third generation.
The company's roots date back to 1926. Founder Anton Strasser, who embarked on a new career path after a war injury, learned the art of accordion making and established his own workshop in Graz. Despite the difficult times during the Second World War, the business continued to grow steadily. After the founder's unexpected death in 1956, his wife initially took over the management, followed later by his son. Ernst Strasser Sr. led the company into a new phase of growth with masterful craftsmanship, entrepreneurial acumen, and a passion for innovation.
In the 1970s, Ernst Strasser Jr. completed his apprenticeship in his father's business and made significant contributions to design and technology. With great dedication and courage, he fundamentally changed the appearance of the Styrian accordion. Unconventional colors, materials, and shapes found their way into instrument making, making the accordion socially acceptable – even in pop and folk music circles. Technical milestones such as the redesigned bass mechanism and the patented SKL mechanism (Strasser Cone Bearing) continue to shape the instruments to this day.
Since 2000, Strasser accordions have been manufactured at the modern production facility in Seiersberg. On approximately 1,200 square meters, the instruments are produced entirely in-house – from the casing to the mechanics, from lacquering to tuning. Around 20 employees combine state-of-the-art technology with traditional craftsmanship and decades of expertise.
Generations of musicians have played their first melodies on Strasser accordions and continue to perform today on stages, in ensembles, and at events both in Switzerland and abroad using instruments from Seiersberg. Strasser accordions stand for exceptional tonal versatility – from folk music to classical, from traditional Stub’nmusi to popular hits – and thus carry the name as a quality brand worldwide.
To mark its 100th anniversary, the Strasser accordion manufacturer is celebrating its eventful history while simultaneously looking resolutely to the future. The highlight of the celebrations will be the grand Strasser Gala on November 7, 2026, in the Schwarzl-Halle in Premstätten.
To coincide with this, two specially designed anniversary harmonicas with exclusive features will be released, providing a musical backdrop to the anniversary year. Company head Ernst Strasser Jr. and his team remain true to their commitment: innovation, precision, and passion for an instrument that connects people – yesterday, today, and in the future.
